WAUKESHA – A man who confessed to killing a woman from Oconomowoc spent part of Monday testifying Monday against the men accused of hiring him.

“It came up more times than i could probably remember,” Justin Patrick Welch told the Waukesha County Courthouse on Monday.

The courtroom was locked tight in Monday’s proceedings of the Kim Smith murder trial as Justin Welch took the stand.

Welch told prosecutors he befriended Johnson and lived with him in Mexico, then struck a seven thousand dollar deal to take Smith’s life.

Welch said he needed the money because Wold was about to become Johnson’s new roommate.

“I didn’t have nowhere to go, after Darren (Wold) came down. I’m not saying it was right, but i didn’t have nothing else to do,” Welch said in the courtroom.

So Welch flew to Milwaukee and hitched a ride to Oconomowoc, armed with his brother’s passport, some cash, and Smith’s picture.

“I needed to know who to kill,” said Welch.

Welch watched Smith’s home carefully, then made his move on October 1st, 2009.

Prosecutors argue Jack Johnson and Darren Wold hired Justin Welch to kill Smith.

According to those prosecutors, Wold wanted Smith dead, so he could have custody of her son and not have to pay child support.

Waukesha County District Attorney Brad Schimel spent much of Monday walking Welch through the events that led up to the day.

Some of the testimony Monday included Welch describing how he had lived with Johnson in Mexico, that the two of them developed a friendship, and that he decided to take the job to murder Smith for $7,000.

TODAY”S TMJ4’s Cody Holyoke reports that when Welch was asked whether he had heard of Smith before the situation, he said no, but explained that he caused her death.

Officers explained last week that they discovered a knife and rubber gloves near the murder scene.

DNA on the gloves connected Welch to Smith’s murder.
