A Detroit dad learned that police found his missing son during a live TV interview.
Police found 12-year-old Charlie Bothuell V, who was missing for 11 days, in his father’s basement Wednesday afternoon.
The boy’s dad, Charlie Bothuell IV, was in an interview with HLN’s Nancy Grace at the time. His phone’s battery was dead, too.
So the anchor broke the news to the Detroit dad — on live TV.
Father of Charlie Bothuell V, Charlie Bothuell IV, finds out on Nancy Grace that his 12 year old son has been found alive in his own basement. Charlie Bothuell IV now faces child abuse charges and his step-mother could possibly be in trouble for hiding the boy.

Bothuell looked surprised and confused. Unable to speak, he clutched his forehead and breathed deeply.
“I checked my basement,” Bothuell finally said. “The FBI checked my basement. The police checked my basement. My wife checked my basement.”
It’s unclear why the missing boy staked out in his own home for nearly two weeks, but sources told My Fox Detriot police are investigating possible child abuse charges against his father.
Charlie’s dad might have beaten the 12-year-old with a PVC pipe, sources told the TV station.
Charlie Bothuell V had been missing since June 14. Police are now investigating possible child abuse charges against his father, who allegedly beat the boy.

Early in the investigation, officers found blood in his room and on his clothes. For a period, they wondered if they were investigating a homicide.
Bothuell said he strictly disciplined his boy — who was homeschooled and on a stringent exercise regime — but never abused the child. No charges have been filed and officers are still investigating the situation.
Police said the boy likely did not act alone in the plot to hide.
They found Charlie behind a barricade, carefully constructed to allow him access to a tunnel that he could use to get outside. He likely came and went as he pleased, officers said.
Charlie Bothuell V’s stepmother reacts to news that he was found alive in their basement. She quickly rushes off camera. The woman could possibly be in trouble for helping to hide the boy.

“There’s no way he could have erected this makeshift area of concealment,” Detroit Police Chief James Craig told FOX.
Charlie told investigators his stepmom, Monique, helped him hide. His father and the family’s attorney denied that claim.
Previously, Monique told police the boy went missing after he failed to complete the daily exercise routine his father demanded of him.
Worried his dad would be angry, Charlie ran away on June 14, she said.
Bothuell said no one in his family knew the boy was in the basement for 11 days. When they found Charlie, the boy had food and water. He seemed to be well taken care of.Charlie was taken to a local hospital for an evaluation, but appeared to be fine, police said. His biological mother is caring for him, now.
