Family Friend Says Death of Child Could Have Prevented if Family Court Listened to Concerns of Safety

with one comment

May 2015, Vine Grove, KY: In the midst of a contentious custody dispute, 11-year-old Tasha Jonas was shot by her own father, 49-year-old John Jonas, who then turned the gun on himself.

This definitely could have been prevented,” says Tanja Manojlovic, family friend. “Karina was fighting to tell the lawyers, the judges, the school and social services that having the father take custody of the child was not going to be a safe environment. But unfortunately nobody would listen.,” Monojlovic said. “The system has betrayed her.”

A hearing was set for August 19, 2015 at the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court in Suffolk Virginia, where Tasha could have decided which parent she wanted to live with.

Mother, Karina Jonas, was on the phone with her daughter moments before she was murdered. “I had found her last night curled up in the bed hugging Tasha’s clothes. That’s all she unfortunately has left of her child,” said Tanja Monojlovic.

LODI (WABC) — An Amber Alert for two children who were taken from a Lodi school Friday after their mother was found fatally stabbed, has been canceled.

Anthony Jordan, 7, and 8-year-old Nicholas Jordan were found safe following a massive search in five states. Police said their father, John Jordan, took them from their elementary school in Lodi and has been arrested.

The boys’ mother, 39-year-old Tracy Jordan was found dead in the home she shared with her two sons on 222 Garibaldi Ave., in Lodi. She had reportedly been trying to divorce the suspect.

Around 5:20 p.m. Friday, Lodi Police officers responded to Tracy Jordan’s home after receiving a call from a concerned family member. Police found her dead with multiple stab wounds, according to a statement from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

Investigators learned that John Jordan, who was estranged from his wife, had picked the two boys up at Wilson School under false pretenses, the statement said. He traveled in the victim’s car to South Carolina where, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, he has relatives.

He was arrested around 12:45 a.m. Saturday when he arrived at a family member’s home in Greenville. The children were found safe in the car. Jordan has been charged with murder and he will be extradited to New Jersey.

In Lodi, Ralph Dejulia, the victim’s boyfriend, said Friday night that he grew worried when Tracy Jordan didn’t pick up her phone all day.

“This has happened in the past he [John Jordan] was abusive toward her, and it came to this,” said Dejulia.

The Lodi Police Department, as well as the Bergen County Sheriff and prosecutor’s offices, were part of the investigation.

New Jersey State Police have canceled additional Amber Alerts in Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

South African Paralympics medalist Oscar Pistorius has pled not guilty to the 2013 murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in what South Africans are calling their “trial of the century.” He is expected to take the stand again today.

Pistorius is being tried for murder and three firearms-related charges. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years. His live-in girlfriend Steenkamp was found shot to death in the athlete’s home in the early hours of Valentine’s Day.

During the bail hearing, Pistorius claimed he mistook Steenkamp for a burglar who had climbed in through an unprotected bathroom window. He admitted to firing four shots through the door before realizing that it was Steenkamp behind the barrier. His testimony will likely reiterate these elements.

Prosecutors, on the other hand, allege that the couple got into a heated argument, causing Steenkamp to lock herself in the bathroom. They believe Pistorius then shot her through the door out of anger. This angle will certainly come up during cross-examination.

South African law does not require the accused to testify first, but it is seen as a show of confidence in his innocence before a jury.
